Draft version http://www.chem.uva.nl/sts/loet/rio/ author website: http://www.chem.uva.nl/sts/loet/index.htm author email: loet at chem.uva.nl >From the abstract: University-industry-government relations can be indicated by using advanced search engines at the Internet. This methodology provides us with a wealth of opportunities, including the construction of time series, the comparison among nations, the distinction between the use of national languages versus English, mapping relational patterns, etc. In this study at the occasion of the Third Triple Helix Conference in Rio de Janiero (April 2000), we focus on the comparison between Brazil and The Netherlands, with reference to an international baseline. In addition to studying the different domains and university-industry-government relations therewithin, we analyze, among other things, the role of the respective (national) languages. DE Lotka's law; scientific productivity; dental science literature; Medline AB Statistical regularities can be observed in many natural and social phenomena. From empirical data on the authorship of scientific papers, Lotka deduced an inverse-square law: the number of authors publishing n papers is 1/n(2) of those publishing one paper. The general type for the relation (1/n(c)) has a wide range of applicability to a variety of phenomena. This study examined, by means of bibliometric tools, whether Lotka's law could be applied to the literature of dental science. Data came from 20 leading dental science journals, as reported in Journal Citation Reports. The search was performed with a programme developed using Visual Basic for Applications, which counted the number of authors and analysed their contributions to the literature. Authorship for all contributions, as reported in Medline, was compiled for each of these 20 journals for the last 25 years, 1971 through 1995. The total number of authors was 43 796, responsible for 124 556 authorships. The journals published in countries other than the USA exhibited higher degrees of author concentration. The dental science literature conformed very well to Lotka's model with c = 1.95. Goedeken - edgoed at iastate.edu A FEW QUOTES FROM THE PAPER: "Significance of Study: The purpose of this study is to identify and isolate articles from within the broad disciplines of the arts and humanities that have cited Andre Malraux in any fashion in order to determine Malraux's influence upon the research literature in various disciplines." "However, bibliometric studies focusing on intellectual influence in scholarship are rare, making this present study and exploratory prototype. Concentration on Malraux's corpus and citations to his works should reveal a subtle and concerted influence upon other disciplines by belle-ettres thinker and writer of Malraux's stature. Unline bibliometric studies of the sciences, technologies, and social sciences, bibliometric studies of the humanities have been uneven. Since paradigmatic characteristics of knowledge as conceived by Thomas Kuhn do not exist in the humanities, bibliometric studies of non-scientific literatures may not conform to Kuhnian standards. And yet, though it does not rely on cumulative knowledge in the ordinary scientific sense, humanities scholarship can still be examined for intellectual and cultural influence. Indeed, bibliometrics can be used to effectively open the door on literary and fine arts activity. This is clearly evident, for example, in the recent work of Vaillant and Rosa, whose mapping of nineteenth century literary production has been creative as well as instrumental in undersanding book and reading culture. This type of research shows that bibliometric exploration in the humanities can be extremely promising for the systematic study of non-scientific activities." "METHODOLOGY: To capture a suitable longitudinal sample, we used the citation field of Arts and Humanities Citation Index on CD-ROM for the years 1975-1994, which produced 710 entries. Only articles were chosen, excluding reviews of secondary scholarship and new editions of primary novels, essays, memoirs, and commentaries, as well as other bibliographic formats. " "CONCLUSION ..... Our study explored the possibility of using the Arts and Humanities Citation Index CD-ROM to gather citations to an author's works and, through substantive knowledge of the target subject, establish intellectual influence. By illustration, this approach can be harnessed to trace any writer's influence in scholarship, whether a disciplinary scholar or a belles-lettres writer. Theoretical and applied uses can be found for such an approach, whether for ascertaining research strengths or for the further articulation of the shifting boundaries of intellectual and cultural scholarship." ___________________________________________ TITLE : Metadisciplinarity, Belles lettres, and Andre Malraux: A bibliometric exploration of knowledge formation AUTHOR Herubel JPVM, Goedeken EA JOURNAL SERIALS LIBRARIAN 37: (4) 51-68 2000 Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 66 Times Cited: 0 Abstract: A theoretical and conceptual mapping of the contours of knowledge emerges through a bibliometric approach using the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Focusing on Andre Malraux and his writings, one can discern how bibliometrics can effectively explore the subtle characteristics of disciplinary knowledge, and how their permutations reflect the evolution of knowledge along a metadisciplinary continuum. Evidence indicates that Malraux's non-disciplinary, i.e., belles-lettres, writing has influenced theoretical thinking in a number of disciplines. Malraux's intellectual and cultural influence can be effectively pursued through referential analysis. This theoretical approach provides a viable conceptual model of intellectual mutation, influence, and bibliometric veracity. This study's results show that this methodology could be applied effectively in other areas of intellectual history and cultural studies. However, the "Summary of Results" and "Applications of This Research" are somewhat helpful. The abstract of this paper is but one sentence but it is a powerful conclusion.... "Mr. Vreeland suggests the use of citation analysis as an appropriate objective standard for measuring and evaluating law library Web sites." SUMMARY OF RESULTS: "The presence of the 80/20 distribution for library site luminosity, while interesting as a bibliometric phenomenon, is something of a disappointment. It indicates that a small portion of sites are providing most of the labor and thought for the entire community. One author, finding similarly small percentages of highly useful sites, concluded that half of the servers in his subject area "designed, financed, constructed and maintained in all parts of the world could be safely switched off, not only without any loss to anyone, but actually to the great benefit of all serious Net users." Perhaps many of the less impressive pages exist only because of the 'gold rush' mentality, which encourages a sense of false urgency. There appears to be a widespread belief that a presence on the Web (even a poor one) is better than having no presence at all." However, having a Web site that no one uses is functionally equivalent to having no site at all." APPLICATION OF THIS RESEARCH 'Currently information of this nature is of use primarily to library webmasters. However, these research methods could increase in importance if, as some have suggested, the ABA elects to pay more attention to electronic services in its evaluations of law libraries. Although ABA accreditation standards now recognize electronic resources as part of a library collection, no particular provision has been made for the evaluation of Internet resources, except in the context of distance learning. Traditional ABA measures have dealt with the size of library collections, but on the internet, the marginal cost of increasing "collection" size is very close to zero, so substantial differences in the extent of Web site coverage will not be reflected in traditional economic data. The citation analysis methods proposed in this article provide a more effective tool for evaluating the quality of Web sites." Issue 1. Paper 1 http://www.cindoc.csic.es/cybermetrics/articles/v4i1p1.html Abstract During these past five years, the Internet phenomenon has been marked by a tremendous growth of users as well as the amount of available information. Since then, Internet has been inevitable for the information specialists and the network of networks has many advantages: a lower cost medium of communication, user-friendly, a world wide means of communication and exchange and mostly an open way of providing dynamically information to all. Because of its very different nature, searching information on the Internet becomes ever more harder. The user has to be familiar with index search, in order to find the right information. But the unbelievable growth of information sources available on the Internet makes these tools more and more inefficient. Actually, a new generation of index search has sprung off. These tools relieve the user of the repetitive commands associated with online browsing. These tools are called ?Intelligent Agent?. We propose in this article how can we use an intelligent agent to create and to hold a virtual library active. ID PUBLICATION PRODUCTIVITY AB In 1998, the Australian federal government published comprehensive performance indicator data on universities. This article makes use of several indicators to examine correlates of research productivity in Australian universities, and to test the explanatory power of Marginson's (1997) typology of universities. Research productivity is measured using the quantity known as the 'research quantum' (RQ), which is a performance-related component of operating grant funding. Results of the analysis reveal that a large proportion of the variability in research performance can be attributed to two latent constructs. One relates together favourable student- staff ratios, a high proportion of graduating students continuing into further study, and a high proportion of research qualified staff. The other connects graduates' experiences of low quality courses, good student progress rates and low attrition with high graduate employability. These factors also predict membership of the four Marginson types. The results confirm that Australian universities can be separated into four main reputational groups based chiefly on research performance. Some implications for the use of performance indicators in a more market-driven system are discussed. "Methods: One criterion on which the guidelines are appraised is the "identification and interpretation of evidence." Accordingly, a well developed guideline would include a comprehensive bibliography of publications cited therein. We scanned these bibliographic details onto a bespoke database. After we standardised the bibliographic data, we looked up all papers on the Science Citation Index and in libraries to add the addresses of the authors and any missing information such as paper titles, volume numbers, etc. " TI: Evaluating "payback" on biomedical research from papers cited in clinical guidelines: applied bibliometric study AU: Grant J, Cottrell R, Cluzeau F, Fawcett G JO: BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL 320: (7242) 1107-1111 APR 22 2000 Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 25 Times Cited: 0 Abstract: Objectives To develop a methodology for evaluating the impact of research on health care, and to characterize the papers cited on clinical guidelines. Design The bibliographic details of the papers cited in 15 clinical guidelines, developed in and for the United Kingdom, were collated and analysed with applied bibliometric techniques. Results The median age of papers cited in clinical guidelines was eight years; most papers were published by authors living in either the United States (36%) or the United Kingdom (25%)-this is two and a half times more than expected as about 10% of all biomedical outputs are published in the United Kingdom; and clinical guidelines do not cite basic research papers. Conclusion Analysis of the evidence base of clinical guidelines may be one way of tracking the flow of knowledge from the laboratory to the clinic. Moreover, such analysis provides a useful, clinically relevant method for evaluating research outcomes and different strategies in research and development. " Symbols and formulas for a few bibliometric concepts" JOURNAL OF DOCUMENTATION 55: (3) 325-334 JUN 1999 The article by B.K. Sen (currently bksen at ndb.vsnl.net.in) contained a deceptively brief abstract. In particular, I believe that we should have highlighted his description of the Normalized Impact Factor (NIF) which I believe will be extremely useful to journal editors. The NIF is described on page 330-1 and gives a numerical ranking from 0 to 10 for journals in a particular category. The NIF for a journal is simply the Impact Factor (IF) x 10 divided by the highest IF in the category for the year or period studied. Sen illustrates from the field of andrology where the Journal of Andrology has an IF of 2.219 but its NIF is 10.00 as the highest in the category. The IF for the International Journal of Andrology is 1.424 and its NIF is 6.417, the result of 1.424 x 10 / 2.219. Andrologia with IF of 0.693 has a NIF of 3.123. The features of NIF are summarized as follows: "The normalised impact factor has got several features common with the IF or as can be seen from the following: ( i) it is a number, and is not expressed in terms of any unit; ( ii) it is also year specific as it is dependent on the impact factor; (iii) the value of the normalised impact factor always lies between 0 and 10 (iv) generally review periodicals tend to have greater normalised impact factors than research periodicals (v) irrespective of subject category, the normalised impact factor of a journal provides an indication of its rank. If the normalised impact factor is in the vicinity of 10, then the journal definitely belongs to very high rank. On the other hand, if it is in the vicinity of 0, then decidedly the rank of the journal is very low." ---------------------------------------- E. With the aim of obtaining an overall and synthetic perspective of impact factor values, we studied the frequency distributions of this indicator using the box-plot method. Using this method we divided the journals listed in the JCR into five groups (low, lower central, upper central, high and extreme). These groups position the journal in relation to its competitors. Thus, the group designated as extreme contains the journals with high impact factors which are deemed to be prestigious by the scientific community. We used the JCR data from 1996 to determine these groups, firstly for all subject categories combined (all 4779 journals) and then for each of the 183 ISI subject categories. We then substituted the indicator value for each journal by the name of the group in which it was classified. The journal group may differ from one subject category to another. In this article, we present a guide for evaluating journals constructed as described above. It provides a comprehensive and synthetic view of two of the most used sections of the JCR, It makes it possible to make more accurate and complete judgements on and through the journals, and avoids an oversimplified view of the complex reality of the world of journals. It immediately reveals the scientific subject category where the journal is best positioned. Also, whereas it used to be difficult to make intra- and interdisciplinary comparisons, this is now possible without having to consult the different sections of the JCR. We construct this guide each year using indicators published in the JCR by the ISI. The "extreme" group (highest impact) consists of 371 journals (7.6% of 4750 titles) with impact of 3.17 or higher. The "high" group is 17.4% with impact between 1.475 and 3.171. Reproduced below is the Conclusion of the paper Conclusion "The Science Citation Index, Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is regularly used in the process of evaluating research and researchers through the journals' impact factor. The JCR has been published regularly every year since 1974. This, together with its uniqueness, the way it is presented in tables of numbers and the analysis provided by the classifications, make the JCR an impartial, valid and essential reference. This role played by the JCR in the evaluation process leads to confound the research work with the journal in which it is published. Yet, assimilating the quality of a study to the reputation of the journal in which it is published can be misleading and have adverse effects which may only be seen much later. These effects may be felt at different levels, such as funding withdrawal, failure to succeed in competitive examinations or job applications, journal suppression from the JCR then from the market. 9-11 The criticism often made concerning the methodology inherent to the system, the process used for calculating the impact factor combined with the results we have obtained with the JCR data, lead us to believe not be used as such for evaluation purposes. 12,13 Other journal evaluation techniques are proposed.14 17 These techniques are also based on citations, but are more complicated to apply than simply reading values from a computer screen. The JCR is used in this way by many decision-makers in research management, editorial policy and library management. The simplicity of using the impact factor may overshadow, unfortunately, the progress being made in the field of bibliometric research. Our guide for evaluating journals, which is the synthetic reconstruction of two sections of the SCI JCR helps to avoid making incorrect interpretations, because it avoids an over-simplified view of the complex reality of the world of journals. The and thereby the user can see at a glance in which subject field the journal is best positioned. Whereas it used to be difficult to make comparisons between subject categories, it is now possible to do so without the tedious and time-consuming consultation of different JCR sections. Moreover, characterizing journals by the group in which they are classified means that we are no longer conditioned by the highest impact factor values, nor the lowest. By making their influence relative, we are able to remove ourselves from the hegemony of journals whose impact factors are outside values, and the evaluation practices based on this type of indicator may thereby evolve. We often use this evaluation guide, combined with other tools, to position research work, to choose journals in which to publish, and to guide our journal acquisition policy and editorial policy. A similar study has been carried out on other ISI indicators. Nonetheless, our results concerning journals and subject categories raise a number of questions. In a given subject category, what exactly is the meaning of the presence of leading journals (those making up the different extreme groups) and/or the presence of journals assigned to several ISI subject categories? Does this presence reflect the dynamics of the subject category, its multi-disciplinarity or specificity? The answer partly lies in the problem of scientific subject category delimitation. As Gl?nzel et al16 noted, "the delimitation of scientific subfields is one of the central issues in both information science and bibliometric research. The classification of scientific literature into appropriate subject fields is, moreover, one of the basic preconditions of valid bibliometric analyses". One possible way of finding answers to such different questions would be to study the interdependence between ISI subject categories, and then to determine the structure of the subject categories through the journals listed within them. This study was carried out with the technical, efficient and rigorous co-operation of M. D?sir?. The article was translated by A-M. Wall., translation and terminology Unit, INRA Jouy-en-Josas." --------------------------------------- (c) ISI, Reprinted with permission Please visit their website at www.isinet.com
