From isidro at CINDOC.CSIC.ES Tue Feb 1 12:42:33 2000 From: isidro at CINDOC.CSIC.ES (Isidro F. Aguillo) Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 18:42:33 +0100 Subject: News in Cybermetrics ejournal Message-ID: Dear colleagues: We recently updated again the information provided by ejournal Cybermetrics and we discover a large amount of new resources about this emerging discipline. It is very promising the high number of articles but also the diversity of topics. As usual we added other links about statistics, journals, institutions and researchers, but it is very difficult and time consuming for us the revision of broken links. If you know of more resources or new links we will tank to hear from you. As usual we specially interested in new papers. We have a problem ( ;-) ) because the quality requirements of our reviewers are so high that we have a reject ratio of about 50%, so we badly need more originals. Thanks in advance. Finally, let me introduce the last accepted item: Daily time series of common single word searches in AltaVista and NorthernLight by Ronald Rousseau ronald.rousseau at kh.khbo.be http://www.cindoc.csic.es/cybermetrics/articles/v2i1p2.html Abstract Over the past year the AltaVista search engine provided irregular numbers of hits. This is shown by collecting a time series of daily searches. The new AltaVista (on the Web since October 25, 1999) is much more stable, but not all problems have been eliminated. The same searches performed on NorthernLight gave stable results. It is suggested to use filtering techniques, such as median filtering, when dealing with irregular time series. An attempt is made to estimate the growth of the Web (as covered by a search engine), based on neutral single word searches. It turned out that this method systematically underestimates the growth of the Web. Collecting time series should be an essential part of Internet research. -- ********************************************************* Isidro F. Studies using such significant samples may be differentiated along 7 distinct dimensions: qualitative versus quantitative, single versus multiple case, nomothetic versus idiographic, confirmatory versus exploratory, cross-sectional versus longitudinal, micro versus macro analytical units, and direct versus indirect assessments. However, the vast majority of psychological inquiries may be clustered into just 4 types: historiometric, psychometric, psychobiographical, and comparative. After presenting the intrinsic and extrinsic justifications for studying famous persons, the main methodological issues concerning sampling, measurement, and analysis are discussed. The future prospects of significant samples in psychological research are then briefly examined. BP 425 EP 451 PG 27 JI Psychol. ID PRODUCTIVITY; PSYCHOLOGY; CAREER AB There can be little doubt that in decisions of academic hiring, tenure, and the awarding of grant support the evaluation of quantity and quality of publication plays a major role. However, the question remains as to which matters more, quantity or quality. Furthermore, does quantity predict quality, and does publishing deeply rather than broadly predict scientific recognition? These questions were addressed by collecting publication (quantity) and citation (quality/impact) data on a relatively elite sample of 99 physicists, chemists, and biologists from major American research universities. Quantity and impact of research were positively related, and although both predicted global eminence, quantity accounted for 37% more variance once impact was statistically controlled. Zero-order correlations suggested that publishing deeply rather than broadly predicted global eminence, and yet holding quantity of publication constant resulted in a nonsignificant relation between depth and eminence. In short, the correlation between depth of research and eminence was spurious. These results suggest that, at least among a relatively elite group of scientists, an interaction exists between quality and eminence, depending on level of quantity. For those scientists who produce large quantities of work, impact of publication has little to no effect on eminence. However, for those scientists who produce relatively few works, impact of publication does predict higher levels of eminence. BP 325 EP 335 PG 11 JI Creativ. Res. J. By analysing the linked sources medical libraries web pages of nineteen of the top U.S. medical schools, this study used the citation analysis method. What was found with this bibliometric approach was a set of 78 most highly cited WWW sites out of thousands of cited links. But is a citation linkage also a causal link? Previous work has given only a very general indication of relationship between science and technology in a very general manner. Relevance: In times of strict budgetary discipline even basic research needs to provide documentary evidence of industrial relevance. However, it is important to avoid a mistaken impression that knowledge transfer from scientific research to patents is a direct process and one that is easily measured by the number of citations. Although case-by-case analysis shows the limitations of this particular bibliometric technique, it nevertheless reveals the importance of results, tacit knowledge and skills acquired through scientific research." <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Gretchen Whitney, PhD tel 423.974.7919 School of Information Sciences fax 423.974.4967 University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN 37996 USA gwhitney at utk.edu http://web.utk.edu/~gwhitney/ jESSE:http://web.utk.edu/~gwhitney/jesse.html SIGMETRICS:http://web.utk.edu/~gwhitney/sigmetrics.html <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> From gwhitney at UTKUX.UTCC.UTK.EDU Wed Feb 9 13:50:03 2000 From: gwhitney at UTKUX.UTCC.UTK.EDU (Gretchen Whitney) Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 13:50:03 -0500 Subject: German speaker/reader requested Message-ID: Hello everyone, I have identified a potentially relevant document for this group, however it is in German, which I cannot read. Impact Factor http://www.biochem.mpg.de/iv/impact.html#eval In German. Translate at http://www.systransoft.com. Summary kindly provided by Dr. Manfred Bonitz ---------------------- The paper by B. Bowman, entitled "Impact Factor", is an extended abstract of a talk given to heads of librarians of the German Max-Planck-Society. It introduces to the ISI- concept of the Journal impact factor and the Journal Citation Reports. It points to the well-known fact that the citedness (impact) of single articles can considerably deviate from the journal impact factor. It states that, therefore, the 'impact factors of journals should not be used for evaluating research'. For librarians, the author says, the journal impact factors can be a valuable tool for journal acquisition policy. --------------------- [n.b. There is also a page for useful and relevant links to other sites. We will continue to build the Web Site including new or revised information right up to and post the Conference. We would hope that people will provide us with their comments, give us ideas for new material to include, and tell us what further links might be useful for our readers. We also want to hear of people who should be on our various mailing lists to receive information about this ISSI 2001 Conference. We are also looking into whether we can provide a listserv for the Scientometrics community -------------- next part -------------- ? particularly since the site at Marseilles, St Jerome Campus seems to not be working as well as it did in the past. DE journal quality; citation analysis; business and management studies ID INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY; ALTERNATIVE RATING SYSTEM; CITATION ANALYSIS; ECONOMICS JOURNALS; MIS RESEARCH; RELATIVE QUALITY; PSYCHOLOGY JOURNALS; FINANCIAL RESEARCH; FLAGSHIP JOURNALS; BUSINESS AB Numerous studies published in the academic literature address the issue of journal quality. However, little has been done to evaluate the broad set of journals pertinent to academic research in the decision and management sciences. This study examines the quality of such journals from a US point of view using both survey- and citation-based measures of journal quality. The survey-based measure is the perceived quality ratings assigned by US academics in the management science field. The citation-based measure is the impact factor, an indication of how often the articles in a journal are cited. This study finds that perceived quality ratings of the journals are positively correlated with citation impact factors. Also, both of these quality measures are found to be positively correlated with journal circulation and negatively correlated with acceptance rate. Journal quality ratings appear to vary across reviewers with different research interest areas and reviewers seem to rate journals higher if they have published in them. A cluster analysis shows that the publication profiles of the Scandinavian countries are more similar to each other than to both the profile of the USA and a norm profile based on all countries except the USA and Scandinavia. The main differences are that the relative proportions of articles dealing with psychological disorders are higher and the relative proportions of articles dealing with educational psychology are lower for Scandinavia than for the rest of the world. Within the Scandinavian countries, Finland and Sweden form one cluster with higher relative proportions of psychophysiological articles, and Denmark and Norway form one cluster with higher relative proportions of articles dealing with psychological disorders. The Conference was held in July 1999 in Colima, Mexico. The Proceedings volume publishes 51 full papers and 18 poster session abstracts.. Conference participants came from 27 countries most notably France, Spain, India, Australia, Germany and Mexico. Meadows notes in his review "... the miniscule contribution from the UK" despite the increasing attention being paid to evaluation of research by British institutions. This same comment could be made of the USA in relation to their participation. There is a notable lack of contributions to this particular Conference from informetric and scientometric scholars in the US. The next ISSI conference, the 8th, will be held in Sydney, Australia in July 2001. Please visit the ISSI-2001 Web Site at http://sistm.web.unsw.edu.au/conference/issi2001/index.html The Web Site gives details of the history of these Scientometric Conferences started in 1987 by Leo Egghe and others, as well as information about the Society, the Derek de Solla Price Awards and Price Medal.
