Methods: We screened by computer for full liver/ gastrointestinal-related articles and reviews the top 40% of journals (according to the annual rating of the SCI Journal Citation Reports; institute for Scientific Information database) in most clinical and basic science disciplines in the years 1992-1996. To be credited with an article, a given country had to be the site of the first institution where the work was conducted. Papers were rated according to the impact factor of the Institute for Scientific Information and to the ratio impact factor/mean European impact factor. Data were also normalized for nondefense research and development expenditure. Results and Conclusions: As randomly tested, the computer search had an error of +/-5-10%. In Europe, Great Britain achieved the highest total impact factor and the highest number of papers. Most of the British impact factor came from publications in British journals. The total USA impact factor exceeded that of Europe by 20%. The average impact factor for a single paper was highest for the USA and, in Europe, for Germany. The temporal trend of total impact factor showed Spain improving by 9% per year, with Germany and Italy also displaying a substantial growth. Expressed per funds allocated in nondefense research and development, Great Britain and the USA had the highest cumulative impact factor. Copyright (C) 2000 S. Karger AG, Basel. DE impact factor; source journal; scientometrics; citation ID SCIENCE; JOURNALS; TOOL AB The impact factor has become a widely used tool for the evaluation of scientific research. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations by the source items published in the journal during the previous two years, Despite its popularity, the parameter should be handled with care due:to the many phenomena that influence citation rates. The correlation between the impact factor of a journal and the citation frequency of a single article is questionable. Author's selection of references is subject to factors unrelated to quality. There is a tremendous bias towards English language journals compared to those publishing in other languages. The impact factor favours research areas that promote short-term studies, whereas a tendency to treat long-term clinical investigations as less important is simultaneously created. ID BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS; SUPERCONDUCTIVITY; INDIA AB From an analysis of papers indexed in three years of Biochemistry and Biophysics Citation Index (1992, 1995 and 1998), it is found that 103 institutions in Israel have published 4,112 papers in more than 990 journals and 64 non- journal sources published from 27 countries. More than 16% of papers have appeared in journals with an impact factor (IF) higher than 7.00 and an equal fraction of papers have appeared in journals with an LF of less than 1.00. The sum of the Ifs of the journals in which papers have been published has been used as a rough measure to quantify each institution's research contribution. Hebrew University, the Weizmann Institute and Tel Aviv University are the institutions publishing the largest number of papers, while Rehovot and Jerusalem are the leading cities. Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences - USA, FEES Letters and Biochemistry are the journals most often used by Israeli researchers to publish their work. To overcome the problems of conducting world-class research in a small country, Israel uses collaboration. with overseas laboratories to great advantage. More than 42% of papers in the sample involve international collaboration; half of them with laboratories in the USA and some with Germany, France, the UK and Canada. Over 10% of papers have resulted from domestic collaboration. In general, internationally collaborated papers are published in higher- impact journals, but domestically collaborated papers more often appear in lower-impact journals than single-institution papers, While the USA remains the most important partner of Israel, papers co-authored with French and UK collaborators raise the IF value of Israeli contributions more than those with other partner countries. To document changes in the rate and impact of publications resulting from Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) biomedical grants since its inception and to relate the number of publications to Health Priority Areas, fields of research and specific types of grant. Methods. All original papers or reviews and editorials published by HRC-supported investigators in peer-refereed journals, from 1990 to 1994, were entered into a bibliographic database. Results. In this five-year period, researchers receiving HRC biomedical grants published a total of 2094 articles in 623 peer-reviewed journals, of which 1190 (57%) derived from HRC support. Of the publications, 90.2% were original papers; the remainder were reviews or editorials. From 1990 to 1994, there was an increase in the number of HRC- supported publications (p<0.04) but not of those deriving from other support. There was no change in the quality of publications over this period, as reflected by the impact factor (a measure of the number of times that publications in a journal are cited). The majority (62.6%) of publications derived from project grants, however, the average cost per publication was 8.4% higher for project than for programme (multi-investigator) grants. Finally, nearly 40% of HRC publications directly addressed designated health priority areas. Conclusions. The present study has examined one aspect of the value for money obtained from the public investment in biomedical research. As the HRC is the major provider of contestable biomedical research funding in New Zealand, bibliometric analysis may be of ongoing value to monitor the effects of changes to the organisation of biomedical research funding in New Zealand. We investigated self-citations in the 1995 and 1996 issues of six anaesthesia journals by calculating the self-citing and self- cited rates for each journal. Self-citing rate relates a journal's self-citations to its total number of references. We defined self-cited rate as the ratio of a journal's self- citations to the number of times it is cited by the six anaesthesia journals. We also correlated self-citing rates with the impact factor of the six journals for 1997. Citations among the six journals differed significantly (P < 0.0001). Anesthesiology had the highest self-citing rate (57%). Anaesthesia, Anesthesia and Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia and the European Journal of Anaesthesiology had self-citing rates of 28%, 28%, 30%, 11% and 4% respectively. The self-cited rates were 31%, 35%, 34%, 27%, 31% and 17% for Anaesthesia, Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia and the European Journal of Anaesthesiology, respectively. North America journals cited the North America literature. This also occurred, to a lesser extent, in the European anaesthesia journals. A significant correlation between self-citing rates and impact factors was found (r = 0.899, P = 0.015). A high self-citing rate of a journal may positively affect its impact factor. ID CLINICAL-TRIALS; MULTIPLE OUTCOMES; DESIGNS; 2-STAGE; GUIDELINES; TOXICITY; EFFICACY; THERAPY AB Purpose: A number of statistical methods have been proposed for the design and analysis of phase II studies based on dichotomous outcomes. To investigate to what extent such methods are in current use, we conducted a survey of published studies. Materials and Methods: We identified studies by conducting a computerized literature search of MEDLINE. We considered trials on systemic antineoplastic treatments described as phase II or pilot. The search was limited to articles written in English and published in 1997. Results: Three hundred eight trials were identified. The majority, ie, 295 (95.8%), had been conducted as single-arm studies, with objective tumor response as the primary efficacy end point. An identifiable statistical design was reported for only 58 (19.7%) of these trials. The quality in reporting the statistical design and compliance with the design in carrying out the study or results interpretation were frequently poor. The frequency of reporting the statistical design was not shown to increase over the years of study start and was not associated with sample size or study duration, Instead, a significant association was found with trial results (which were less frequently positive among studies with a statistical design) and with the impact factor of the publishing journal. Conclusion: This survey shows that the quality of the statistical component of published phase II cancer trials is generally poor and raises suspicion that low quality is likely to bias study findings. Journals might improve the methodiologic standard of published articles through a more vigilant reviewing policy, (C) 2000 by American Society of Clinical Oncology. DE analytical chemistry in Croatia; historical review; education; scientometric analysis . AB Analytical chemistry started to develop in Croatia as an independent scientific discipline at the Royal Agricultural and Forestry College in Krizevci (1860). Lectures in analytical chemistry began at the University of Zagreb in the school year 1875/76 within the University Institute of Chemistry. Today, analytical chemistry is taught as an independent course at eleven university faculties, in Zagreb, Split, Osijek and Rijeka. This paper presents a comparison of the compulsory contents of basic curricula in analytical chemistry in Croatia with the WPAC Eurocurriculum. Scientometric analysis of the Croatian scientific output covered by the Analytical Abstracts shows that during the 1980-1996 period Croatian analytical chemistry scientists published 442 papers, 89.6% of which were also indexed in SCI. Croatian analytical chemists most frequently deal with spectroscopic, chromatographic and electroanalytical methods. Distribution of the scientific analytical publications with respect to the number of authors, analytical method used and the number of total and independent citations is graphically presented. Fac Med, Zagreb, Croatia. ID SCIENCE-CITATION-INDEX; SCIENTISTS; SYSTEM AB There are in Croatia 241 journals appearing at least twice a year. They make for about 2/3 of those periodic publications whose contents are recorded in the Croatian Bibliography. Series B, contributions in journals and proceedings. Their scientific communicability (sci.comm.) was evaluated by four indicators: peer review, language, timeliness/regularity, and foreign authorship; journals from the natural and applied- technical sciences (NT) faired considerably better than those from the social sciences and humanities (SH). This dichotomy was also apparent in the 1990 to 1995 comparison. Although there were no dramatic changes, the sci. comm. did improve, and more so for the NT-journals. New SH-journals more frequently appeared and ceased. Hence, the criteria for decision making in science policy must not be identical for all types of journals. The results of the sci. comm. evaluation by our method is congruent with the coverage of Croatian journals in the international secondary information services. This flow into the "capillary" system of scientific information exchange leads to a reasonable "visibility" of Croatian journals via the ISI- journals. Both contributors have critically examined the use of Reisman and Kirschnick's work on the content analysis of MS/OR articles, each from a different perspective; Doyle sets out the analytical steps that would be required and argues that there are few, if any, gains to be made from the additional work involved in the content analysis. Jones argues that, even though content analysis has yet to be tried, peer review of journals and citation indices studies are to be preferred because they appear relatively more valid, reliable and practicable. In response I restate the case for analysing content, consider the specific arguments of Doyle and Jones, air other concerns, and conclude that content analysis should remain on the agenda despite the obvious difficulties. An analysis of the 1994 volume of the Journal of the Operational Research Society is described to illustrate how the use of content analysis can provide insight. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
