I agree with Jonathan’s suggestion (first place article gets the first prize, second and third place share the prize, all speakers are invited).

Dear all,

I like Isabell’s suggestion of inviting all to the workshop.

However a problem with her suggestion of ranking the winners based on their oral presentation is that some may not be able to attend (e.g., no funding to attend or unable to obtain Visas in time.). As I understand it there were no reservations about the first ranked paper. There were reservations about the second ranked paper being presented at ISSI and submitted to JASIST. If I were making the decision, I would award the first place article first prize (especially as it was by a sole author), and make the other two papers joint second place. Then I would invite all three winners to attend the workshop and give an oral presentation.

Best,

Jonathan.

Dear all,

since each of the three contributions seems to be pretty strong what about inviting them all to the workshop and make the final decision based on the oral presentation?

Dear all,

I am delighted that the two of the three winners are from the group of which I am a member.

Kim wrote “Obviously, we’d like to let authors know as soon as possible to allow for any necessary VISA and other planning requirements.” Early notification is important as I know that Fereshteh and Ehsan would require visas. Would it be possible to notify the winners almost immediately and sort out matters to discuss (e.g., Given that there might be money for two papers and/or an award for best solo and best first-authored… how do people think we should proceed?) later?

Best,

Jonathan.

Hello All,

I’m sorry for the late Friday email, but I believe we have a winner of the Student Paper Contest!

Fereshteh Didegah <https://sites.google.com/site/fereshtehdidegah> . <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/submission_download.cgi?a=4026514;submission=1524127> Modelling Article Citation Impact Factors Using an Integrated Statistical Method from the University of Wolverhampton, UK.

We have two additional papers of high merit,

Second Runner up: Ehsan Mohammadi & Mike Thelwall. Mendeley readership altmetrics for the social sciences and humanities: Research evaluation and knowledge flows also from the University of Wolberhampton, UK

Third Runner up: Qi Wang & Ulf Sandstrom. Cognitive Distance and Peer Review: a study of a grant scheme in Infection Biology from KTH-Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

Our Prize write up says the following: The winner will be awarded a one-year individual membership to ASIS&T and a cash prize, sponsored by Elsevier. If of sufficient merit, two winners may be announced: one for the best first-authored paper and one for the best sole-authored paper. Monetary prizes and membership may be available for more than one paper, depending on merit. Authors of highly rated papers will be invited to submit a short biographical piece to be featured on the SIG/MET website. In addition, these authors may be invited to present their research under their own expense at the SIG/MET pre-conference workshop at the 2013 Annual ASIS&T Meeting.

I know there was some concern that the Second Runner Up presented at ISSI, and may already be accepted to JASIST (not yet published). Given that there might be money for two papers and/or an award for best solo and best first-authored… how do people think we should proceed?

Obviously, we’d like to let authors know as soon as possible to allow for any necessary VISA and other planning requirements.

Thank you and a special thanks to Judit, Laura, Dietmar, Stasa, Isabella, Andrea and Sean who graciously served as our reviewers!

~Kim
