[Sigmet-officers] Webmar debate

My notes on our Durban meeting were sent in a previous email. In this
meeting, we had just come from a lively discussion of the Book Citation
Index in which Eric Archambault had made some serious criticisms of the
implications of this new resource. We discussed the possibility of making
this into a webinar in which Jonathan Adams would do a quick (no more than
10 minute) introduction to the Book Citation Index and then the benefits and
dangers of this new source would be discussed. We discussed having Eric
serve as the "con" for the debate, but couldn't find the appropriate "pro".
We decided to wait and ask other SIG/MET officers for their opinions on
this. We thought the benefits would be: a wide audience interested in the
Book Citation Index, a fairly narrow focus, a good chance to discuss
positive and negative implications of citation indices in general.
To address the other things in the emails:
1. I agree that a weekday webinar would be better. We just held a SIG/ED
webinar with 159 registrants on Wednesday at 2p.m. Great attendance (101 at
the peak) and discussion. I think a Friday afternoon webinar could be very
successful.
2. I believe the $49 is the standard non-member price for these webinars.
The goal is to make it cheaper to join than to attend. I would be supportive
for having free or reduced prices for students.
3. I might suggest that both speakers not come from Europe.
Best,
Cassidy
