[Sigmet-officers] Planning the Web-site

Dear all,

Thanks Angela for having drafted the site and for your pertinent questions.  I have added my comments to the document you provided.  I agree that a Google document makes it easier to ensure that everyone works from the most current version and would be very happy for the SIG to use Google docs again.

Best regards,
Jonathan.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for being patient about the website content.  I had a tight project deadline, but now that it has passed, progress on this should be swift.

With so many people giving input, I admit that I'm not especially excited about passing around Word files.  We could accomplish essentially the same thing with a Google document, if everyone is willing to give that a shot.  I think this method would make it much easier to ensure everyone works from the most current version, and discussions could still happen within the text if we maintain conventions of using colors and/or initials to signal participants.

I have a tentative outline up at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/10qEyD1tTXf5jpV89w9MTPnuQ5YWCqdp2Xe_xiDeNHgY/edit?hl=en&authkey=CI3NrvoG

Anyone with the link can access and edit the file, so it should be easy for all of us to contribute content and suggestions from any browser.  If it's a serious concern for anyone, perhaps there is another solution I haven't considered.  If nothing else, maybe most people could contribute via the Google doc, and if there are a few people who need to use a standard Word doc, I can merge those in.

Phase 1 is ultimately very straightforward, so once we agree on some of the finer details, we can progress quickly to developing content for the activities and resources sections.  The parallel discussion will no doubt be what the ideal layout will be, so while everyone is looking over the proposed outline, I can draft a prototype that can also be discussed.

(As for Cassidy's questions, I think they're both fine suggestions.  We may want to discuss the best way to announce things like the call for workshops, entries for the paper contest, etc.  Do we need more of a "push" mechanism than just the website/listserv - e.g., twitter?  Either way, any announcement we send out should link to a permanent information page, so I think those should all have a home on the website, probably under Activities.)

Thanks for any input!

Best,
Angela

Hi Angela,

Could you please send this list your draft of the contents of the Web-site within the next few days, so that we can keep to our target of uploading the Web-site by the end of this month?

Many thanks,
Jonathan.

This all looks great!  We will also host a copy of the webinar on this website?  Will we post the call for the workshop here as well?

Hi all,

Thanks Stasa for added Angela to the listserv and for helping her catch up.

Thanks Angela for your message and attachment.  Your comparison of other SIGs and suggestions for SIG/MET provide a very useful platform from which to plan the Web-site.  I am very happy to be involved with the planning.

In other to involve others, I present my feedback on Angela’s message in the attached.  As always, anyone on this listserve is very welcome to comment or suggest changes.  I have used track changes, as this format is more accessible to me.

Best regards,
Jonathan.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I've missed some of these messages!  Stasa realized I hadn't been added to the listserv and has helped me catch up on what's been going on.

I would love any/all help planning the website and was just preparing something to send out to stimulate discussion.  I've attached a quick review of what the other SIG websites currently contain, crudely coded.  (Feel free to ask for clarification if any of the categories are unclear.)  I added a column for SIG/MET and proposed a few categories that we may want to include, but upper level organization is very flexible, and there may be many more elements we'd want to incorporate.  I just thought this might help to get the discussion going.  Perhaps once we identify the basic components of the website we can collaborate on the content that will be used and the organization/interface design.

Thanks!
-Angela

Hi all,

I did not receive any suggested changes to my planned activities for the year, so I have decided to press on with the activities for December and January.

Dec: Complete activities relating to starting the SIG.
Dec: Plan the SIG Web-site.
Jan: Prepare and upload the SIG Web site.
Jan: Set-up and advertise the student paper contest.

Thanks to the substantial help from Dietmar and Cassidy, most of the activities relating to starting the SIG have been completed.    So our largest task at present is planning, preparing and uploading the SIG Web-site.  I suggest that all officers contribute to the planning and preparation of content of the Web-site, as this reduces the workload on Angela who has agreed to be both Webmaster and Communications Officer.  Could all officers please post their suggestions regarding the Web-site to this list?

Please note that the officers’ list requires moderator intervention for postings over 40K, and that Word 2007 documents are typically about half the size of Word 2003 documents.  So in order to avoid unnecessary work for our moderator, I suggest that you post attachments in Word 2007 format.  I would like to thank Staša for having agreed to moderate the officers’ list and for having approved my posting of over 40K.

Best regards,
Jonathan.
