[Sigmet-officers] Dick – please clarify

Dear Dick and SIG/MET
officers, I agree with Judit that
the situation is very delicate.  I am
willing to play an active role in this matter
Gretchen has written “I
am mulling over if I am willing to let you have the archives” and “I'll kill
SIGMET at the end of this calendar year.”  Before I contact Gretchen, I am asking Dick to please clarify: (a) what
measures can ASIST take to prevent a member (or former member) destroying
intellectual property belonging to ASIST and (b) what punitive measures can ASIST
take against Gretchen or her university if she puts into affect her threat to
destroy intellectual property belonging to ASIST?

Best,
Jonathan.

Dear All,

This is a very delicate situation. Of course we do not want
the SIGMETRICS list to discontinue. It is rather hard to follow the discussion
thread.

On January 4, 2011 Gretchen agreed to continue to moderate
the list.

Previously, on December 24, 2010 she wrote (if I understand
correctly):
I would let the new SIG do their things their way. I will
close  down SIGMET the end of the fiscal year, which will give them ample  opportunity
to figure out how to resolve communications.
I'm more than willing to let you have the subscribers names.
I am mulling over if I am willing to let you have the archives… I'm leaning to
have you have them as > long as you can preserve them as my work of art and
my creation.

She made negative remarks about Twitter and Facebook last
year as well.

I think that it is best that Jonathan approached her,
thanking her and reminding her of her email of January 4, and assuring her that
nothing changed since; we view the SIGMETRICS list as a most valuable list
where SIG/MET members and non SIG/MET members conduct serious metrics
discussions. We ask her again to continue to moderate the list. Also, explain
that we have never asked to change anything; we only wanted to have a direct
link from ASIST to the SIGMETRICS list. I think that cc-ing Dick on this would
be a good idea. And of course cc-ing Stasa.

Now from our website we link to http://web.utk.edu/~gwhitney/sigmetrics.html,
which says that this is a virtual special interest group (but this page is not
maintained by Gretchen, so we might not be able to change this).  Btw, I see that our page was updated on http://www.asis.org/SIG/met.html,
but the information on http://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGMET/ is outdated.

Let us hope for the best. In the meantime we should look for
new options as well, because this is already the second time Gretchen announced
that she will close down the list.

Regards,
Judit
