North American Symposium on Knowledge Organization
June 18-19, 2009
Syracuse University School of Information Studies
Syracuse, NY

Preliminary registration is now open for the 2009 North American
Symposium on Knowledge Organization (NASKO 2009).  The symposium is
sponsored by ISKO-C/US, the Canadian and United States chapter of the
International Society for Knowledge Organization, and will be hosted
by Syracuse University School of Information Studies (i-schools).

This will be the first official chapter meeting of ISKO-C/US. As such,
it offers an ideal occasion to take stock of the past in light of the
current state of knowledge organization and with an eye to how this
living heritage might be leveraged for the future. We hope that NASKO
2009 will serve as a springboard for future symposia and lay the
groundwork for research agendas in years to come.  In the spirit of
these objectives, the theme of NASKO 2009 is “Pioneering North
American Contributions to Knowledge Organization.”  The symposium
theme borrows from the approach adopted by W. Boyd Rayward for the
historical essays on people, events, theories, movements, policies,
and publications that were “pioneering” in LIS that he collected in a
special issue of Library Trends (Vol. 52, No.4, Spring 2004).
Following Rayward’s lead, we hope that NASKO 2009 will not simply
celebrate past accomplishments, but that it will also provide an
opportunity for reflective and substantive evaluations of these
accomplishments both within their historical context and from current
perspectives.

The registration fee for NASKO 2009 is $70 US ($30 US for students) to
be paid at the door, either in cash or by check drawn on an American
bank.  To pre-register, please send an email to nasko2009 at gmail.com
with your name, title and professional affiliation.

We have arranged two options for accommodations in Syracuse while
attending the symposium:
