[Sigkm-l] DSIR-TERI announce four-day Workshop on Digital Libraries

Workshop on Digital Libraries, New Delhi
31 October ? 3 November 2006

The Workshop on Digital Libraries is being organized by TERI with support 
from Technology Information Facilitation Programme of Department of 
Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The aim of the 
Workshop is to equip participants with adequate practical knowledge so as 
to enable them to efficiently carry out digital library projects using 
open-source software. The workshop will be held at TERI, IHC Complex, 
Lodhi Road, New Delhi. For more details about the workshop, please visit

Workshop Objectives:
* Familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and 
institutional repository
* Facilitate understanding of digitization and practical knowledge on the 
digitization process
* Offer hands-on experience to develop digital libraries and use of 
open-source software such as DSpace and GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library)
* Help participants develop practical skills in the installation of open 
source software for creation and implementation of digital libraries

Programme:
The workshop programme will include tutorial-type presentations, 
demonstrations, practical sessions, and will cover the following topics:
* Issues and challenges of developing digital libraries
* Role of institutional repositories in open access movement
* Understanding the digitization process: scanning, OCR (optical character 
recognition), and conversion
* DSpace: overview, installation, and administration
* GSDL: overview, installation, and administration
* Converting CDS/ISIS databases to GSDL
* Dublin Core metadata standards
* OAI?PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting)
The faculty will comprise of digital library experts from TERI and other 
institutes.

Participants:
The workshop is intended for library and information professionals, 
knowledge managers, information entrepreneurs, and e-content developers, 
who have an interest or are involved in setting up digital repositories in 
their organizations. To allow rich and useful interactions, the number of 
participants is being limited to 25. 

Registration:
The registration fee is Rs 4000/ per participant. Additional registration 
from the same organization qualifies for 10% discount.
