Dear Subscriber,

Warm Greetings! The July 2012 issue of '/Information Technology in
Developing Countries/' is now available at:
http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/egov/ifip/current.htm

The current issue of Information Technology in Developing Countries
carries seven articles and a conference announcement. The first article
"Interactive Information Dissemination System" by T.S. Anurag and
Shambhu Kumar conceptualises a multimodal information system that can
address farmers' information needs through a combination of push pull
ubiquitous technology such as smart phones, featured phones, Interactive
Voice Response System (IVRS), Internet, tablets and kiosks. The article
is based on an analytical framework developed from the findings of a
study of 26 ICT initiatives in agriculture in India.

This is followed by an article on "The Open Content Methodology and
Subject-oriented Educational Environment" by Valery S. Meskov, Irina V.
Smirnova and Anna A. Mamchenko. The article focuses on inclusion of a
subject into the picture of the educational world as well as on some
aspects of applying of the post-non-classical approach to the theories
of learning and design of subject-oriented environments. Conditionality
of goals, aims and criteria of education by used approaches and
principles is proclaimed, and the correlation between type of social
framework and dominating methodology is revealed. Further, the article
discusses e-Learning as a subject-focused virtual environment which
possesses educational competencies and supports processes of
transformation of the Subject through immersing in the
subject-to-subject communication space of culture.

The next article by Dr. Susan Sharma is titled "Environment Education
Online: Learning in a Community of Practice". The author discusses the
transition of education in India with the arrival of disruptive
technologies, and the trend towards individualized learning, life-long
learning and collaborative learning with specific reference to an online
portal for Environment Education.

Mira Desai's article on "ICT-Oral Cultures Development" questions the
role of ICT in communication between users belonging to oral cultures,
and whether development through ICT can be 'sustainable' in a country
like India where most basic amenities are yet to be distributed amongst
the poor and the social disparity is widening. The article also
highlights the challenge of application- ICT for entertainment by
playing Farmville or for education, ICT for social connectivity or
merely for fun?

The next article on the "Impact of ICT on Schooling" by Utpal Mallik
highlights the need to analyze what happened in schools with computers
during the past quarter of a century, and to understand the impact that
the technology has made, or has failed to make on school education -- on
students' learning and teachers' teaching. D.S.K. Rao's article
describes a community based integrated information system to promote
"Inclusive Growth in Agriculture & 127 Other Vocations". The article
conceptualises a web based ERP product supporting all Indian languages
and mobile devices, which can be cloud deployed with a provision to
technically integrate several implementations in different communities
as clusters for remote consolidation and monitoring at the
district/state/zone/national level. The last article titled "RFID-Based
Solid Waste Collection" by Suchit S. Purohit and Vinod M. Bothale
explores the potential of Radio frequency identification (RFID) for
efficient solid waste management.
