Applications invited for Post-Doctoral Researcher in Community
Informatics
The Canadian Research Alliance for Community Innovation and Networking
(CRACIN) is inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow position for their
project investigating community networking initiatives in Canada. CRACIN is
a three-year collaboration between Canadian university researchers, community
networking practitioners and government policy specialists studying: 1. the
benefits of community-based information and communications technology
initiatives; 2. the role of government funding programs in supporting these
initiatives; 3. the long term sustainability of community networking initiatives.
The research is based on in-depth case studies in seven communities across
Canada. In addition, five broad-based studies explore issues widely shared

The post-doctoral fellowship would begin as early as May 2004, but no later
than September, and would continue until September 30, 2006. The Post-
Doctoral Fellow (PDF) will work closely with the four co-investigators to:
assist them establish research directions, respond to and synthesize research
findings from each of the twelve sub-projects, prepare research summaries and
progress reports, write and present project research papers, liaise with
government partners and international collaborators, oversee budget
expenditures, co-supervise an administrative assistant, handle media relations
and generally support the 12 research teams. These duties will constitute
approximately half of the full-time position. The other half of the time, the
PDF will pursue a research program of his or her own choosing, but that
directly draws from and contributes to the wider CRACIN enterprise. Some
travel funds for presenting this research are available. The annual salary for this
position is budgeted at CAD$35,000, including benefits.
The applicant should have a recent PhD, excellent communication skills, a
promising research program, a good sense of humour, and significant
experience in community-based technology, community networking, or
grassroots technology movements.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with an
international team of leading community informatics researchers as well as with
government policy-makers and community groups. The Post-Doctoral Fellow
will gain research management experience as well as build a rich network of
academic and non-academic contacts.
