CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS:

Library and Information Science students and recent graduates are
invited
to attend and participate in Sofia 2002: Libraries, Civil Society and
Social Development, an international conference organized by the School
of Library and Information Management, Emporia State University and the
Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of Sofia "St
Kliment Ohridski", Bulgaria. The conference will include a Student
Session -  New Librarians: Challenges and Opportunities , focusing on
the
interests and perspectives of library school students and new
librarians.

The half-day Student Session will be on 14 November 2002, running
parallel to the main conference. The Session will feature presentations
of papers, panel discussions, a poster session in which students and
recent graduates can showcase and share ideas and projects, and
opportunities to meet colleagues from around the world.

Topics to be explored include:

-Role of information professionals in society and culture
- Role of libraries and information professionals in economic and civil
development
- Future of information professions and librarians
- Changes technology brings to the profession
- Library cooperation, locally and internationally
- Library education
- Career options in the information professions

Call for Papers for Student Session  New Librarians: Challenges and
Opportunities  14-16 November 2002

Papers

Library school students and new librarians are invited to submit
abstracts for papers to be presented that address key topics of the
students  session to the Organizing Committee by 1 July 2002. A final
decision will be made 1 August.

Instructions for abstract submission to Program Committee:
All submissions must be sent via e-mail, either as attachments or in the

body of the email message. Attachments in rtf (rich text format) are
preferred. The abstract should be no more than 150 words. Please include

3-5 keywords. Please include author information only in the body of the
e-
mail. If sending the abstract as text in the body of the e-mail, please
separate author information from the abstract.

Instructions for manuscript submission to Conference Proceedings:
Manuscripts, excluding references, must not be more than 5,000 words
(approximately 22 double-spaced A4 pages). All manuscripts must be
submitted as e-mail attachments, or provided on PC-compatible diskette
(non-returnable) at the conference. Accepted formats: .rtf
(preferred), .doc (version 98 or 2000), or .wpd. Please follow
the  Guidelines for Submission of Papers  (.pdf document linked from the

page  Call for papers  of the main conference home page) when preparing
manuscripts for the conference proceedings.

1. Each poster presenter is asked to be with the poster during the
presentation times to interact with conference attendees to talk about
your work and answer questions.
2. Word limit of approximately 250 words.
3. The poster should include a statement of the problem, issue, or
situation; objectives of the research or project; methodology used to
solve the problem or implement the program; major findings or outcomes
and their significance and conclusions.
4. There should be a logical sequence - introduction, development, and
conclusion - to your display. Indicate in your submission if you will
need a table. Please bring pins, thumbtacks, or velcro for mounting your

display.
5. All lettering should be simple, bold, and easily legible at a
distance
of 1.5 meters.
6. Please include a heading with the poster title, your name, and
library
or school.
7. Visuals may enhance the effectiveness of your presentation.
Simplicity
and legibility are more important. Charts, drawings, photographs, and
other illustrations are encouraged.
8. You may wish to provide a sign-up sheet or record the names and
addresses of attendees who might want to contact you for more
information.
9. Hand-out materials are encouraged and should be brought with you if
possible.
