Perhaps this would be a useful time to reach out to other SIGS and/or ASIST management to see if they know of someone.

I don't, but it would be interesting to see if there is any data out there about the average student loan debt owned by MLS (and other) graduates. This could be coupled with an evaluation of the impact of not forgiving public sector employee debt.

Librarians don't make much. Taxing assistantships, not forgiving their student loan debt, etc. would make it harder for people to earn an MLS. I assume the same goes for most other information professions that don't have large amounts of jobs readily available in the private sector.

Even some sort of analysis of data would be interesting...

I think it would be nice to evaluate current policy changes regarding deregulation that will be affecting banks and customers as well as how tax law changes will affect students.

Does anyone know colleagues in other depts that can speak to these and maybe tie into how this will all affect the field of info science? Impact on future professionals, maybe stalling enrollment of students due to taxes on loans... the ethics (or lack thereof ) behind these moves and the affect on consumers and students... just a couple of ideas.

I'm happy to coordinate a webinar (or two) on behalf of the SIG. My question is what topic(s) would make sense for a webinar? I've been thinking about antitrust law and big tech companies lately.

Beyond that, I'm open to any suggestions!

Greetings all,

Thank you to Shannon, A.J., and Emily for your service and for putting together an excellent workshop. I’m looking forward to developing a few projects with you all this year as we continue to raise awareness of the importance of policy and ethics research.

The conference theme that we have to work with is tailor-made for us to make a significant contribution, “Building an ethical and sustainable information future with emerging technologies.” Shannon was kind enough to share a pair of planning documents to stimulate conversation, so at this point I think it would be a good idea to open up discussion of one or more projects to undertake before the next conference, such as webinars, as well as 2018 conference session ideas. I’ll start us off. I have an interest in the topic of sustainability ethics and will be happy to take the lead on developing either a pre-conference workshop or panel on this topic. Who would like to take on one of the other listed projects, or what other projects do you have in mind?

Cheers,

John
