Dear SIG-IFP Members,
As per message below, Kendra Albright is seeking funding assistance to bring in some panelists from Africa. After consulting with Dick Hill, this seems like something the rules would allow. In the past, we have donated up to $500 to SIG-III for the International Paper competition to bring winners to the annual meeting. I think we can contribute the same amount to this effort, if you all have a sense that we should do that. Please let me know your thoughts as soon as possible, so I can get back in touch with Kendra.
Thanks,
John N. Gathegi, Chair

Dear Colleagues,

SIG III, SIG USE, SIG MED, SIG Policy, and SIG Social Informatics are
co-sponsoring a panel entitled, "Information Realities of HIV/AIDS Information
in Sub-Saharan Africa: Barriers and Challenges to Information Professionals,"
bringing together four scholars from different regions of the African continent
to discuss information and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. Two of the scholars
have changed jobs and have lost their funding to participate on the panel. I
am asking each of the SIGs to contribute to the funding needed for airfare and
hotel so that they can attend and contribute to this important topic.

Airfare is approximately $2,000 and the conference hotel, assuming a shared
room, for five nights would cost about $388 each. A little help with meals and
incidentals would also be required, so the total needed would be about $5000.

I have also asked ASIS&T to waive their conference fees so that the scholars can
also attend a workshop on North American Information Initiatives in Sub-Saharan
Africa during the conference (scheduled for Monday afternoon).

Thank you for your consideration of this important request and I look forward to
hearing from you soon.

Kind Regards,
Kendra
