The SJSU information school recently added a new career pathway in digital curation for its Post-Master 's Certificate program students. A similar career pathway will be available starting in fall 2014 for graduate students enrolled in the school's fully online and ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program. Both programs' pathways incorporate courses recently added to the school's curriculum, including two foundation courses: Digital Curation; and Tools, Services, and Methodologies for Digital Curation. Courses in the digital curation pathway will introduce students to an emerging field within the information profession. Lecturer Alyce Scott , faculty advisor for the new digital curation pathway in the fully online Post-Master 's Certificate program, says the field surrounding digital data is growing and information professionals are a perfect fit to fill the role of digital curator. "Digital data is here to stay, and there will continue to be a growing need for people with the training necessary to manage it," said Scott. Information professionals who work in digital curation have job titles like digital preservation manager, digital curation archivist, data research scientist, and curation tools and services developer. Scott encourages individuals who may want to pursue a career in digital curation to look at job descriptions in the digital and data curation field to see if the skills required are of interest to them. For example, typical job descriptions seek individuals with skills in technical development of digital resources; managing digital repositories; managing activities to preserve digitized materials; and overseeing technical standards for image, audio, and video digitization projects. The SJSU information school's career pathways are tools MLIS students can use to choose electives and start their career planning. On the school's web pages explaining each of the 13 pathways, students can find out more about what they can expect to learn if they choose courses in that pathway, recommended coursework, and possible employment opportunities after graduation. The school is currently accepting applications for admission in fall 2014. The deadline to apply for the MLIS program is April 1, and the deadline to apply for the Post-Master 's Certificate program is June 25. Fall courses begin on August 25, 2014. The School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University (SJSU) is now offering current and future information professionals the opportunity to enroll in one or more fully online, graduate-level courses, and earn college credit. The i.School Open Classes program offers more than 60 of the school's electives to information professionals who want to update their skills, position themselves for leadership opportunities, explore emerging trends, and learn more about how to use the latest technology to better serve clients. "We've heard from many people that they want to take just one or two of our courses as part of their professional development plans, and in response, we decided to offer our Open Classes program," said Dr. Sandra Hirsh, the SJSU information school's director. "For example, I regularly hear from our alumni, who tell me they want to update their knowledge by taking another class, and now they can." The program also makes it possible for individuals who are considering enrolling in a graduate program to try out courses before applying for admission. If they decide later to enroll in a master's program, they can transfer the units earned in the Open Classes program and be one step closer to completing a master's degree. The courses are open to everyone, with no course prerequisites and no minimum educational requirements to enroll. They're also easy to access because all of the courses are delivered fully online. Individuals can live anywhere while taking a class. Most course content is offered asynchronously, making it possible to complete assignments and interact with instructors and classmates when it's most convenient. Courses in the Open Classes program are electives offered in the school's ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) programs. The courses cover a wide range of topics, including emerging technology, digitization and digital preservation, records management, web usability, data mining, information visualization, collection management, digital asset management, and library services for children and teens. In addition, many courses are focused specifically on building leadership skills. The i.School Open Classes program is available during the summer, fall, and spring sessions. Courses available for the summer 2014 session are posted on the school's website, and fall 2014 courses will be posted soon. The deadline to sign up for summer courses is May 15, 2014, and individuals will be able to enroll on a space available basis. Booking open. In-Reply-To: <5304E92E.5040903@lukehouse.org> References: <5304E92E.5040903@lukehouse.org> Message-ID: <5310F774.2060707@willpowerinfo.co.uk> Dear Colleagues, *Making metadata work* - Monday 23rd June 2014 - BCS Office, 5 Southampton Street, London WC2E 7HA. Full details and booking at This event will be a showcase for the latest developments in the evolution of the Semantic Web, exploitation of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), metadata annotation to aid workflow automation, information retrieval in networks of diverse media assets, Linked Data, and other opportunities for using metadata. It is a Joint Meeting of ISKO UK, IRSG (Information Retrieval Special Interest Group of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT) and DCMI (Dublin Core Metadata Initiative). The day will be modular: attendance in the morning is optional, with a choice of workshop or tutorial, while the afternoon programme is for everyone. *Morning options* *a) Tutorial: Metadata management in Sharepoint* (10.00 -12.00) While Sharepoint 2013 offers more metadata capabilities than ever before, the range of options can make it hard to implement the most effective way. Management of controlled vocabularies is a particular challenge. This tutorial will enable you to pick the brains of an experienced consultant, Marc Stephenson of Metataxis. *b) Workshop: Vocabularies and the potential for linkage* (9.30 ? 12.30) Various approaches to the linkage of value vocabularies (KOSs) and/or element set vocabularies (metadata schemas) will be described by Pierre-Yves Vandenbussche (Fujitsu, Ireland), Dan Brickley (Google), Gordon Dunsire and Stella Dextre Clarke, with emphasis on the opportunities as well as the barriers to widespread adoption. After that is a case study from Johan De Smedt and Agis Papantoniou, both of TenForce, that draws on more than one technique. The subsequent discussion will address the prospects for take-up, aiming to help participants with application or development of similar techniques and projects. *Afternoon meeting* (Plenary, 14.00 ? 18.00) Martin White: The importance of metadata for high quality Search Sean Bechhofer: Wf4Ever: metadata for ?Research Objects? Mark Sandler: Semantic Media: a new paradigm for navigable content for the 21st century Richard Ranft: Enhancing discovery of the British Library's audio collections Antoine Isaac: A portrait of Europeana as a Linked Open Data case (in progress) Andrew MacFarlane: Analysing creative image search queries to determine important facets Followed by networking, wine and nibbles from 18.00. *Registration fee and booking* Full day, including lunch and a choice of tutorial or workshop: ?120 (or ?70 for members of ISKO, IRSG or DCMI and for full-time students); Afternoon only: ?60 (or ?25 for members of ISKO, IRSG or DCMI and for full-time students). Booking is open at *About ISKO UK* ISKO (International Society for Knowledge Organization) is a not-for-profit scientific/professional association with the objective of promoting research and communication in the domain of knowledge organization, within the broad field of information science and related disciplines.
