I've got a lot of detailed specs, but I'm light on rationale and as yet no testing has been done.

hahaha! Wouldn't that be nice :D I don't think I've ever had a 'clearly articulated rationale' to justify any client's requirements yet. It's a great point, and probably a route we'll have to take: build in specific metric requirements to monitor the impact of the overlay cart/lack of basket design.
