Hi all
I belong to a copy editors' list (CEL) among many others. They have a fairly
detailed set of messages about their list, which can be seen here:
http://www.copyediting-l.info/
These were developed in part, I believe, to manage issues such as this list
has had. The info means that no-one is in doubt about what the CEL list is
all about and how it works and what the rules are.
One of the more useful aspects of CEL list is the use of tags at the start
of the message (see their FAQ page for tags). It means participants can weed
out those types of post that do not interest them. We could develop similar
that could cover conference adverts, potential work, etc.
In terms of out-of-office messages - most email systems should be able to
send these to 'messages sent directly to me' which would avoid list posts,
which are sent TO the list. I'm sure we are all capable of managing such
extraneous ones that slip through, without the list admin carrying such a
responsibility. Another instruction for new members?
I like lists. They facilitate discussion and community in a way that many
other forms of social media do not. I'm not keen on Facebook for
professional discussion - which this undoubtedly is. I don't think lists
are outdated - not yet, anyway - and I hope this list continues.
Finally, Thanks to Susan for her comments.
Regards
