  - most infoviz research has been about building cool toys

  - infoviz will not save the world, but it should dramatically
    improve certain applications. It won't replace our modern
    interfaces, but it should augment them.

  - we don't have good frameworks or models to help us decide which
    problems would benefit from visualization techniques, or why,
    or how to design effective visualization apps

  - the modern GUI is a kind of infoviz app, something that is
    largely unrecognized (ie: it's about interaction with visual
    representations, and relies heavily on visual perception)

  - infoviz needs to solve non-technical problems before it will 
    succeed

  - most infoviz researchers are interested in solving technical
    problems
