big ugly and expensive and does way more than you'd ever
need) but I'm pretty sure I can get what I want from the
free stuff -- although I need to capture screen size and
resolution statistics, which isn't in the server logs by
default. My main problem with the stats programs is that the
graphs are soooo ugly.

... Anyway, I was really hoping to hear some war stories
about the "bar graph that turned the tide in a meeting" or
the time "we showed them traffic had improved XX% on the new
pages." I have a feeling my client will be surprised to know
how many of their visitors first enters the site through sub
pages for example.

The best online article I've read so far comes from
Webtechniques several years ago, which talks about the
different types of monitoring (server, network and
application based), and lays out a lot of the limitations of
the web log file format.
