Jared - your right in that research shows most people don't use or see
breadcrumbs to begin with - and Neilson's argument was (it doesn't hurt -
and could help - so do it), makes even less sense if it is intentionally put
in a place where it's guaranteed not to be seen -- at the end though  -
leave it up to the  user research - because anything less is just out
opinions (which are infallible, of course).
