I just analysed my logs on my personal web site to compare the
proportions of navigation clicks on tabs (main sections), local
side navigation and breadcrumbs:
59% - tabs (major site sections)
31% - side nav (local links)
11% - breadcrumbs (context)
(total clicks: 10,720 - doesn't include clicks by me or bots)
11% is not an insignificant amount. Or, if you disagree, why not
ignore the 11%, say, blind users out there and just build for
people with perfect sight.
By the way, I can obtain this information on my web site as I add
flags in the different kinds of links specifically to allow for
this kind of analysis. Is this the kind of thing you do to collect
data, Jared?

P.S.
I find that on my own site - EVEN THOUGH I built it myself from scratch and
know otherwise - I find myself clicking on breadcrumbs rather than on tabs
because I feel as if the site won't have to do so much to display a page.
Go figure.
