Manager Information Architecture

You've heard our tagline: "That was easy." Now come join one of the key
teams that is making that statement a reality.

The Staples Usability team is looking for a Manager of Information
Architecture who is passionate about the user experience at every level. In
this position you will design and direct the user interaction and
information architecture (IA) of our websites and internal systems.

This means you will be asked to work on user interfaces for:

•    Our high traffic E-commerce sites such as Staples.com, Stapleslink.comand
Quill.com, which represent one of the biggest online businesses in the world
•    Our internal associate facing systems such as intranets, order
management systems and AS400 applications
•    Retail systems for use in our stores such as our point-of-sale cash
register software, kiosks and signage applications

The ideal candidate for this position is a well rounded user experience
professional who has a yen for design but can also perform usability
research if needed. You must be fairly hands-on, have great interpersonal
skills and be able to run projects with minimal supervision. You must also
have:

•    A long and impressive track record of building usable solutions
•    Thorough grounding in usability principles and experience with
usability research as well as techniques for contextual inquiry, task
analysis and interaction design
•    Ability to produce designs that leverage previous learning and consider
how seemingly disparate systems may work together to create efficiencies
•    Leadership abilities to drive a varied group to design consensus

You must, above all, be someone who knows how to balance business and user
needs.

Responsibilities
•    Lead project teams in defining the functional business requirements and
the UI through JAD and white-board sessions and other collaborative
techniques
•    Partner with Usability Manager on user-research activities and
integrate findings into design through an iterative process
•    Architect and document user interaction solutions through site-maps,
process flows (experience maps), wire-frames and thumbnail flows
•    Perform expert reviews on concepts and wire frames
•    Manage internal employees and contractors as needed
•    Give input on long term IA strategy and vision. In this capacity:
­     - Lead IA strategy implementation across websites and systems
­     - Define reusable IA/ user-interaction models/patterns
­     - Develop a holistic view of all Staples systems and document them.
Actively maintain this repository to reflect design changes and proposals

Qualifications
•    Minimum of an MS degree in Interaction Design, Cognitive Psychology,
Industrial Design or related discipline required
•    Minimum of 6 years experience including at least 4 years of
UxD/IA/interaction design experience in a corporate or consulting
environment required; Experience in retail environment a plus
•    Proven experience translating business strategies into conceptual
diagrams, task flows, and site maps using standardized tools and techniques.
Strong experience with Visio preferred
•    Experience managing internal and contract employees
•    Strong understanding of computer platforms and browsers and the effects
those variables have on the design of a system and ensuing impact to the
user. Well versed in coding languages such as HTML, JavaScript
•    Ability to lead high-level, cross-functional definition meetings that
map out the user experience of new projects
•    Awareness of various methodologies for software creation and the
software development life cycle
