Good question.

But then again, the older age bracket, not having arrived in a vacuum,
presumably were likely immune to the allure of pink to a similar extent when
they were young? Or does something happen to women when they reach the 24-45
year bracket that abruptly change their 'girly-ness'?

We witness, for example, a lot of Japanese teenager trends in makeup, games,
mobile usage, fashion, etc, but they don't necessarily move up to older age
brackets vertically or to the West horizontally. Similarly, iVillage.com
gets a lot of buzz, but I don't know a single woman, young or old, who goes
there. And so on.

Is there this much of a disconnect between marketing/design trends and
reality?

It depends.
If it didn't, you'd be out of a job.
