Have a look at Slashdot.org as well. Their "tagging beta" is an
interesting attempt to keep some editorial hold over user-generated
tags.

is totally experimental, we don't know exactly what all of this might
mean: it could mean one day we consolidate and change all "canine" to

tag. This is the nature of a system in active development. Don't say we
didn't warn you!"

It's only open to users with accounts of a certain age though. My
account qualifies, and I've tried tagging a few stories, but as with
most things Slashdot, it takes rather a lot of getting used to.
