That's a good question. I think "entertainment" sites like game
portals and video sites (youtube) would be an all together different
type of site..
The other thing missing from those 3 categories is Applications...
I might modify the list as follows:
1. Marketing Sites (aka Vanity)
2. Information Sites
3. E-commerce
4. Application (del.icio.us, remember the milk, 37signals)
5. Entertainment
Now, just like everything else on the web, none of these will be black
and white. There are Information Applications and Marketing
Applications ... But I think those 5 general categories can more or
less cover most sites .. (that last sentence was intentionally vague)
Realistically though, the exercise of categorizing website into
defined buckets is impossible.. a better way to organize websites
might be tagging/metadata .. IMHO this is why bookmarking apps like
del.icio.us and magnolia are becoming more popular than in browser
hierarchical bookmark management.
