I Have That Pattern.

I first did it when we took a stupidly complex advanced search and  
turned it into an incremental refinement process. In a blindingly  
flash of the obvious we then saw that the "normal" search was just  
the first step in that process. Users loved it.

Used the same technique a few times since to good effect.
