Just out of idle curiosity, I'm sure this navigation technique has a
name by now - does anyone know what it is?

I dimly recall a company selling off-the-peg applets like this that you
could deploy on your site for your navigation. They called them
"navihedra" but I'm not getting any Google hits on that.
