My theory is this behavior stems from a general lack of training on
browsers. We self train and it's farily easy to master a browser in a
short period of time. If a solution works (such as typing URLs into
Google), we keep doing it, even if it's not the most efficient method.

Nice theory... Try this on for size: I've been a geek since the days of the Sinclair ZX81 (1k RAM, folks!), and a web developer since before Mosaic (using an app called "World-Wide-Web" on NeXTStep). If someone knows their way around a browser, it's me. I'm as trained as they come.

Lately, however, I've found myself typing URLs into the google search bar in Firefox, IE, or Safari. I do it automatically, without thinking. Don Norman would call it a capture error: I'm so used to typing into that field that my mouse pointer just goes there by itself!

When a behavior is consistently rewarded with success, it becomes automatic. The user's level of training might have nothing to do with it.
