If ever there was an example of what attributes are needed to
make a social web site compelling and engaging, look no
further than http://www.jyte.com/
The site itself is asinine but I still managed to be caught
up in it for a couple of days before deleting my account (and
I must have been the first to do so because I got a server
error).
"If you have something to say, then make a claim and let
the community vote on it."
Rather than using the site to discuss real world issues
(e.g., "Nature has more influence than nurture"), it's been
used for claims such as "homemade pizza is tasty".
Here are the features I think which make the site compelling
(in descending order of importance):
1) http://jyte.com/spy - a real time update of new claims,
votes and comments
2) clear user-interface (pink | green * saturation) with AJAX
3) comments on claims
4) ability to see comments & votes on one's claims
5) recent claims on the home page
6) RSS feeds
7) make a related claim
8) 'cred' - people can assign cred to users
9) the ability to make claims on specific users
Which of the following features could you take away from
Flickr and it still be as compelling?
a) comments on your photos
b) number of views
c) number of people who favourited your photo
d) number of contacts
