True. Unstated in my list is the assumption that strategic design doesn't
happen without strong leadership, not of a committee but of a design steward
with cojones.

It's unrealistic to expect that from, say, Ed Zander at Motorola or Ed
Colligan at Palm or Sim Wong Hoo at Creative or Steve Ballmer at Microsoft.
Their pronouncements reveal not a molecule of design sensibility or
appreciation. Unfortunately for colleagues who work at such companies not
much will change before their business models are fundamentally rearranged
and reflected through internal processes, and that's tough.
