Surely.
But there are business models that make it extremely difficult to do so.
Companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, IBM, etc., have for years been
selling complexity. They have systematically created ecosystems of IT
support, maintenance contracts, distribution channels, training centers,
endless shelves of books, armies of consultants, brigades of analysts and
pundits, and so on. It's a gigantic feedback loop, and not always overt.
Even if these companies somehow became competent enough to embed quality
into the initial product, it would be organizationally, culturally and
certainly financially a difficult proposition to disrupt that ecosystem.
Innovation in this sphere is not going to come from these kinds of
companies. And hasn't.
