Must be. :-)
OSS has so far been about developers. Not users and certainly not designers.
I haven't seen any significant and widespread realization among OSS
proponents that this isn't an optimal state of designing software. So either
they are right (design should be tacked on to what developers conceive and
create, and brand new hw/OS/sw configs for millions of users should be
tested after they are shipped, etc) or...they are wrong.
If they are right, it should set back design about a decade and a half, and
reduce it from a growing sense of strategic importance back to visual
decoration.
As a designer (and developer) who has been fighting against the supremacy of
developers for a long time, I find that alarming.
