I saw this and thought, it's pretty crazy that a purportedly legitimate
site would ask for the password to your email account.  But then I got
an invite to Facebook, checked it out and found I'd have to give
Facebook my email password too, just to see who else is already there!

Illegitmate sites aside, shouldn't such social networking sites promote
social reponsibility, champion the privacy of their users, and help
protect the community from spammers?

Facebook and others should recognize that asking users to provide email
passwords normalizes that expectation among users and makes users more
prone to illegitimate sites in the future.

After all, if Facebook asks for it (even if they don't keep it stored
anywhere), it must be okay, right?
