PS: looking at your original problem specification (what do we call
something that is almost everything but not quite), if I had to guess
and was free of the constraints of political correctness, I would have
to use the term "bridesmaid", as in "always the bridesmaid, never the
bride". Thankfully, that is not a choice I have to make. :)
