Doesn't it depend whose hands the design is in? Good designers know how to 
use them effectively, while poor designers will use them as a crutch, no?

The question then becomes: when is their use "good design" and when is it a 
"crutch"? Like all possible design solutions, some are more effective in 
some contexts than others.
