[Sigia-l] Independent consultants?

Hi, all.  I'm curious whether any of you are librarians who developed IA
skills on the job and then went on to form your own consulting or design
firm.
 
If you were advising another librarian who wished to do the same, what
would you say?  Things you'd do differently?  Resources to use?  How
much independent capital do you need, if any?  How did you build an
extra-organizational client base?  How much money do you make as an
independent consultant (vs. your stable salary)?  Do you feel cut off?
 
I know some of these are personal questions, so you could respond to me
off-list if you want.
