Oh, OK.

My formula is: take the theoretical maximum the user might input (eg
surnames are rarely longer than 50 characters) and double it to make the
limit. BTW, I then eschew length limit error messages - just stop people
typing more (although it depends rather on the context - that's my
general approach).
