Thanks everyone for the input. I dug through the archives and found
Todd's previous post on this subject, which was very useful. 

Personally, I prefer to stagger my windows so I don't need to rely on
alt-tab or the taskbar to switch programs. Knowing the trend is
important, but after reading Todd's reply, now I am interested in
knowing what has and may continue to influence the trends (such as MS's
changes).
