Talking about science fiction, this thread made me think immediately of
a Star Trek episode (I believe) in which invisible aliens had boarded
the enterprise. These aliens fed on emotions and hence had to do
everything to invoke emotions among the crew. 

Perhaps that is was it is, an alien travelling through cyber space and
feeding on attention and anger of people :-)
