This is not circa 1996 or corporate volume buying. It's the consumer market
and they both cater to *exactly* the same group, digital music users.
Microsoft has been trying desperately for the past two years (initiative
after initiative, hardware/software, solo/partners, etc) to unseat Apple. To
the point of their CTO Ray Ozzie telling everyone that for Microsoft to be
as successful as Apple in *this* market with *these* users, they must
approach the problem in a much more integrated manner. Just like Apple. UX
being in the center of everything.

Apple-bashers aside, that Microsoft explicitly recognize this is to their
credit. That they haven't been able to come up with a competitor product is
what that video (and this thread) is all about.
