In September, PHICHI is hosting a full-day event combining a highly
interactive tutorial on usable design with Ajax and a half-day card-sorting
workshop. This seminar will be taught by William Hudson, founder of Syntagm.
Discounts are available for early registration and students. Details

PHICHI Workshop:
Hot Topics In Interaction Design

Ajax - Usability & Design

* What is Ajax?
* How does it work?
* How does it differ from other web technologies?
* What are its strengths and weaknesses for usability?
* How do I apply Ajax effectively in design?

If you are losing sleep on any of these questions this session will cure
your insomnia. It is a highly interactive tutorial that looks at the
application of Ajax from both theoretical and practical standpoints.
Previous experience of Ajax is not essential.

Agenda

    9:00 Introduction

        * Group discussion - What is Ajax?

    10:00 How Ajax works

        * Ajax basics
        * How Ajax differs from other web technologies

    10:30 Coffee break

    10:45 Interaction theory

        * Change and inattention blindness
        * Attentional gambling
        * Discussion - Strengths & weaknesses of Ajax

    11:45 Design guidelines for Ajax

        * Q & A

    12:00 Lunch break

Old Cards, New Tricks:
Innovative Solutions for Card Sorting

* Is card sorting as difficult as it sounds?
* What do those dendograms mean?
* How can I get the most from the results?
* How is card sorting done in practice?
* Is there an quick and easy way to collect the data?

Card sorting can be very effective in navigation design but traditional
approaches make it a daunting task, especially for the uninitiated. This
workshop gives participants hands-on experience of several new techniques in
the conduct and analysis of card sorting, in particular using bar codes for
data capture and several innovative methods of analysis. (For further
information see interactions magazine September+October 2005 or visit

Agenda

    1:00 Introduction

        * Cluster analysis and dendograms
        * New and extended analysis techniques
        * Navigational alignment

    2:00 Card sorting in practice

        * Preparation
        * Qualitative and quantitative analyses

    2:30 Activity - analyze results on an existing site

    3:15 Coffee break

    3:30 Activity - prepare and conduct card sort
    4:00 Activity - capture data with bar code readers
    4:30 Activity - produce analyses and interpret results
