What, then, do you make of the whole school of thought that puts the
designer on some exulted platform between the client and the user whereby
it's his job to "protect" the user and spread UCD goodness and "good
intentions" over the environment, at the client's expense?

Or put another way, is it the client's responsibility to choose the "right"
designer for its own agenda or the other way around?  Once a designer is
hired, does that mean that the designer is now "cleared" to pursue his own
(additional) agenda? In addition to the project particulars, are agendas
supposed to be negotiated between the client and the designer? Who is the
"intensions" arbiter?
