That's because you think I am denying the value of graphic design. (You are
talking to someone with an MFA, after all :-)

Graphic design is in the realm of HOW/implementation, not of WHAT/strategy.
If someone is comfortable and content with implementation, that's their
personal choice. But if they want to lead, that's just not enough.

Obviously I can't speak for AIGA but I suspect that they saw a vacuum at the
design leadership position and they are trying to fill it. I don't know that
they are engaged in "wholesale rejection and ostracization of the term
'graphic design'" but I see it as a matter of elevation not substitution.
