There are, I'm sure, multitudes of graphic designers, IAs or any number of
master-of-one-trade practitioners who *are* perfectly happy with what they
do. And thus should be left alone to enjoy themselves. :-)
Like I said, my advocacy is not descriptive, but prescriptive (of the
discipline and the market). Someone *does* always end up doing "strategic,
product/service/experience shaping." Why not the Designer?
Specialization is not a prescription to attain that power. In my book, there
are no young Designers. Without hands-on design, technology, communication
and business experience over time, one just doesn't begin to posses the
necessary background to affect "strategic, product/service/experience
shaping" or command the necessary respect from other stakeholders to be
effective. More importantly, without such training and experience one
doesn't feel competent and comfortable enough to even reach for that power.
So it's a matter of elevation, not substitution, of skills and expectations.
