My plea is for designers to reach a level of respect and authority to make a
difference so that products, services and experiences they create are
better. You can't do that by evermore specialization. Those who make
fundamental decisions have command of broader terrain, longer vistas and
deeper understanding. Specialization may or may not bring personal
satisfaction but it's often a recipe for marginalization.

ADs are much closer to the Designer I'm advocating than graphic designers.

I don't know how they define their own disciplines. But architecture (beyond
the specificity of buildings) as a broad concept is certainly an integral
part of design. On any given project, I spend at least a 20% of my time on
it.
