I spent a number of years in a web producer role before landing a job
as a Sr. IA.  The important things that helped me were to inject as much
IA and UX process into the producer role as possible.  This will provide
more experience in IA work as well as build leadership skills.  You will
have not only handled the IA work but proven you can lead it as well -
very important. 

Also, I believe  it helps to have academic credentials in an IA related
field.  I'm just completing (over 6 years part time) a Master of
Information Science degree, which really backs up my credentials as a
senior IA.

Another factor may be your resume itself.  If you want, send it to me
