I don't want to rehash old arguments, but Design (the way I've been defining
it here for years) does not in any way exclude research, certainly includes
the prototype in its scope and wouldn't be complete without user feedback.

The point I was making is that what designers and usability people get hired
for are often two different scopes: synthesis and analysis, respectively.
The latter often get to analyze what the former has synthesized. I don't
think Jared wants to get hired as a Designer, for example.

Now if I am a Designer, say, at Microsoft in charge of an application, I can
follow two paths:

1. What MS has done for 15 years, namely stuff as many features as I can
and let users sort it out and specifically not worry about app security,
hoping to use my userbase to live-test it for me, or

2. I can distill a features list to a coherent core and design a security
architecture so that actual users won't be used as guinea pigs in the field.

My contention here is that Jared's company would have a far better looking
P/L statement at the end of the year if they were hired for option #1 above.

Design is doing for a dime what anyone can do for a dollar.
