Taxonomist Job Description

This project is for an exciting startup business developing a Web 2.0 site that will leverage technology from the Information Science and Information Architecture fields in new and innovative ways.

The main task in the first phase of this project will be to develop two hierarchical taxonomies in business management

The core task involves processing terms from a large pool, identifying useful concepts and refining the terms used to describe them, and then arranging these in a meaningful faceted hierarchical structure. There may also be a need to create definitions that would be clear to a general audience for various aspects of the data in the hierarchies.

The two taxonomies will need to be created within a month’s time. Roughly 80% of the work will be done by you alone. A subject matter expert will be available to assist with the remaining 20%, which comprises the most technical terms and concepts in the pool.

These two taxonomies will be leveraged in the next phase in the project by the subject matter expert. There will probably also be a need to work closely with the subject matter expert in the second phase.

In addition, the taxonomist will
• participate in the design of taxonomy-based user interfaces for searching and display of results and possibly modify the taxonomy to better serve this function.

Must be able to
•          think logically and creatively, generate innovative ideas, prioritize complex tasks, and work well under pressure;
•          look at existing situations and problems in novel ways and come up with creative solutions and transform these creative ideas into practical reality;
• adapt and work effectively with a variety of situations, individuals, and groups.
Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or comparable degree. Business background is strongly preferred.Ideal candidate will have 3+ years experience in information architecture of taxonomies, controlled vocabulary or classification schemes for business subject materials, including demonstrated consensus building and problem solving in a distributed team environment. This is a part-time development contract project and may require 10-15 hours or more per week depending on the level of activity for the process. Remote/Telecommute Ok.
