Having two generations of librarians preceding me in my family, I was 
always scolded when rainbow-like organization schemes emerged.

It wasn't as strict as having to use Dewey, but a general topic area 
always had to come first, followed by size for shelf space efficiency.

And no miscellanea allowed! That was the best rule of all - made me 
think harder about how to categorize for the rest of my life :)
