This is an excellent point. Mac users, in particular, rarely have
their browser window extending edge to edge. They nearly always like
to see their Finder (desktop), so even though most of them have been
at or above 1024 for several years, their browsers are often at 800.

Another point: 1024 is not really 1024. The scrollbar accounts for 40
pixels, meaning 800 is really 760. You can download these premade

I agree with Ziya on the other points. Nielsen has several articles on
the subject of usability and monitor resolution, but they tend to be
from 1998-2000.
